FIR Filed Against TMC MP Mahua Moitra
FIR Filed Against TMC MP Mahua Moitra: The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra following her controversial remarks against National Commission of Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma. This move has stirred significant political and social debate across the country, raising questions about the balance between free speech and respect for public figures.
On July 4, Mahua Moitra posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing Rekha Sharma arriving at the site of a stampede in Hathras. The video, which was later deleted, depicted a man holding an umbrella and walking behind Sharma. Moitra’s comments on the video were perceived as derogatory and disrespectful by many, leading to an outcry.
The NCW took suo motu cognizance of the remarks and called for immediate action. The Commission’s complaint stated that Moitra’s comments were “extremely outrageous and a sheer violation of a woman’s right to live with dignity.” They demanded an FIR and a detailed action report within three days.
DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa confirmed that Mahua Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to actions intending to outrage the modesty of a woman. This section is a critical part of the legal framework protecting women’s dignity and has been invoked in various high-profile cases to address disrespectful behavior towards women.
Responding to the NCW’s demands, Mahua Moitra took to X, challenging the Delhi Police to act swiftly on the suo motu orders and indicating her willingness to cooperate. She stated that she was in Nadia and available for arrest if necessary, asserting, “I Can Hold My Own Umbrella.”
The incident has garnered widespread attention, with opinions divided along political lines. Supporters of Mahua Moitra argue that her comments were taken out of context and that the FIR is an overreach, infringing on her freedom of expression. Critics, on the other hand, maintain that public figures, especially women in leadership, should be treated with respect, and derogatory remarks should not be tolerated.
